Driver shortage is becoming a larger topic in the transportation industry every day. For the past several months there has been talk of future driver shortages coming. Transport Capital Partners (TCP) recently completed a survey about possible driver shortage coming due to lower freight volumes and carriers exiting the transportation industry. Here is the article:
The coming challenges for over the road trucking in North America in the coming years include but are not limited to: http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=75215
- Less drivers entering the industry.
- Declining freight volumes may cause carriers to exit the industry.
- Shippers are pressured by their company and customers to keep freight prices low to remain competitive in the North American marketplace, meanwhile, carriers cost to operate are continually rising.
This mix of downward pressure on rates and rising costs, makes it challenging to predict the future and many carriers may hold off any growth until they see either higher rates or high freight volumes. In the coming years, large carriers (25 + trucks) will find ways to survive and adjust their operations according to the market place demands. However, the smaller carriers with (1-10 trucks) are the carriers that we need to work at keeping in this industry. For those of us that work in this industry daily know that truck capacity is getting tighter every day.
Have a great week!
